“We can not live on this planet with dead oceans. If our oceans die, we die.”

Why Coral Reefs?

Next to rainforests, reefs belong to the largest and most complex ecosystems of our Earth. They don’t just offer habitat for countless sea creatures, they also play an important role for our climate. Coral has the ability to sequester carbon dioxide so that it doesn’t find its way into the atmosphere.

That’s why we’re supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation to help rehabilitate the Great Barrier Reef with every order.

What the Reef Restoration Foundation is doing and why

The Reef Restoration Foundation has taken on the goal of breeding and replanting new coral. During this process, small pieces of coral which have broken away are collected and then affixed to tree frames in order to regrow. It’s similar to the way offshoots from house plants are propagated. The great news is that these new corals come from specimens that have already survived a bleaching event. It is believed that they are then more resilient and won’t react so sensibly to higher temperatures. When they have grown into healthy, maturing colonies they can be planted back into the reef and thereby strengthen the whole ecosystem.

If the water temperature exceeds critical threshold, corals become stressed. Therefore they bleach and can also die off. In the years 2016, 2017 and also 2020, there were massive coral bleaching events that had a devastating impact on the Great Barrier Reef.
